âI followed your advice,â said Ali Osman, âand retired to my estate.â
âThis is your estate?â
Ali Osman looked around with an expression of distaste. âYes,â he said, âunfortunately.â
The room was if anything slightly larger than the corresponding one in the Pashaâs Cairo house. Because of the heat there were fewer carpets on the walls, but the floor was as elaborately tiled, and over in the darkness a fountain was playing. Among the silk and leather cushions occasional little silver boxes caught the light from the lamps the servants were holding.
âIt is so awful here,â Ali Osman complained. âThe people are barbarous, there is nothing to do, no one to talk to.â He looked at Owen hopefully. âAnd what are you doing here, my friend? Surely you have not come here for your health too?â
Owen decided to tell him only half the truth.
âI am working on a case,â he said.
âA case? Down here? Alas, my friend, you must have fallen out of favor. Like me,â said the Pasha gloomily.
âThe case concerns someone on your estate. A boy.â
âA boy?â said Ali Osman, reviving. âHow interesting!â
âA student, Hamid, who killed himself with a bomb two years ago.â
âThat is much less interesting,â said Ali Osman. âIn fact that is not interesting at all.â
âYou remember the boy?â
âBarely. Is he worth remembering?â
âYou paid for his education.â
âA big mistake,â said Ali Osman. âObviously.â
âWhat led you to select him?â
âDid I select him?â
âSomeone selected him.â
âIt was probably one of my servants.â
âYou had nothing to do with it yourself?â
âI probably saw him,â Ali Osman granted. He frowned in concentration. âDid he have large ears?â
âYou sent him to the School of Engineering.â
âWhere apparently the only thing he learned was how to make a bomb.â
âWhy did you send him to the School of Engineering?â
âI send them all there. In the hope that they might learn something useful. Useful to me, of course, not to them.â
âDo you send someone every year?â
âAfter that unfortunate incident,â said Ali Osman drily, âa gap seemed advisable.â
âA strange incident,â said Owen, âespecially strange in that it happened at Hamada. In Cairo, yes, it would be nothing out of the ordinary. But in Hamada!â
âIt just goes to show,â said Ali Osman, âthat even on your estate you canât be safe. I should have remembered that when you suggested coming here.â
âIt was surely not intended for you.â
âWasnât it? Who else in Hamada is worth bombing?â
âWere you here at the time?â
âNo.â
âWell, thenââ
âThey were preparing,â said Ali Osman, âgetting ready for the next time I came.â
âThey knew you would be coming.â
âSome time I would come,â said Ali Osman. âIt might be yearsâI visit Hamada as infrequently as possibleâbut they would be ready. You donât know these people. They are terrible people, backward. They store things in their hearts. For years. And then one dayâpoof!â He spread his hands.
âThey would surely not be making a bomb just on the off chanceââ
âEducation,â said Ali Osman, âthatâs at the root of it. Itâs a big mistake trying to educate these people. It just fills their heads with idle nonsense.
